Black or mixed-race skin is thick and resilient. Its high melanin content slows down aging and acts as a natural barrier against the sun’s UV rays. However, to keep it looking healthy and radiant, specific skincare routines are necessary.

Contrary to popular belief, black skin is highly sensitive to external aggressions such as lack of sunlight, hard water, cold, stress, and pollution, which tend to dry it out. As a result, it becomes dehydrated and produces excess sebum, leading to a shiny appearance. Here are some strategies to address these issues.

1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Moisturizing is a fundamental practice for maintaining black skin. For removing makeup, use a gentle milk or gel cleanser. To keep your skin soft and flexible, choose products containing nourishing agents like shea butter. If your skin is oily, opt for a mattifying treatment to absorb the sebum and reduce shininess.

2. Be Cautious with Exfoliation

Though black skin is robust, it is also delicate. Do not over-exfoliate as it can irritate the skin and stimulate sebum production. Limit yourself to one exfoliation per week. This frequency is enough to refine your skin texture without causing damage.

3. Don’t Pick at Pimples

Black skin is prone to scarring. Therefore, it’s crucial not to pick at pimples. If you experience a breakout, use an anti-inflammatory or a healing cream. For severe acne, consult a dermatologist who can prescribe an appropriate treatment.

4. Combat Dark Spots

Black skin is susceptible to hyperpigmentation, especially from the healing of wounds or acne. To prevent new spots from forming or to minimize the pigmentation of existing ones, protect your skin from the sun with a high SPF, particularly if you are using antibiotic or contraceptive treatments.

Indeed, the combination of sun exposure and hormones can lead to the development of dark spots. Lastly, avoid lightening products that contain cortisone and hydroquinone. These substances can strip the skin, promote the formation of dark spots, degrade skin quality over time, and potentially lead to cancer.
