You don’t need to be a chemist to understand the ingredients in your beauty products! Here are some insights that will help you decipher the labels on the back of your favorite cosmetics.
Introduced in the United States in 1973 and made mandatory in Europe since 1999, the INCI list or International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients provides a detailed composition of a product. This allows you to keep an eye on all the ingredients contained in your favorite cosmetics, but you still need to learn how to interpret them.
1. Distinguish Between Ingredients Listed in Latin and English
The INCI list should be clear and visible on the packaging, with all components listed in Latin and English. It can be confusing at first. Generally, terms in Latin refer to natural substances, while ingredients listed in English are synthetic substances. Recognizing this difference gives you an initial idea of what the product contains.
2. Focus on the First Few Ingredients
The first 3 or 4 ingredients on the list are the most significant. These are the components present in the highest concentration. As you move down the list, the concentration of each ingredient decreases. However, a manufacturer might include concentrated ingredients at less than 5% in the finished product. Be wary of misleading claims like “with aloe vera” or “with jojoba oil”. Always check that these ingredients are towards the top of the list, not at the bottom.
3. Be Cautious with Leave-On Products
Pay extra attention to products that you do not rinse off, such as creams and deodorants, which can be absorbed into the skin. For instance, avoid alcohol, which can be very drying, as well as Phenoxyethanol, aluminum, and Triclosan. Watch out for controversial ingredients that may be irritating, allergenic, or harmful to health. To assist you, consider using reputable websites or mobile apps like the Cosmetics Observatory or The Truth About Cosmetics. If unsure about an ingredient, you can easily look up its exact function.
4. Be Wary of “Organic” and “Natural” Products
Not all organic products are created equal. Trust in certifications that can provide a good indication of a product’s reliability and educate yourself about different reputable labels. Also, be mindful that some products are marketed as natural when they may not be fully natural. Remember, natural does not necessarily mean risk-free.
