Every December, a unique astronomical event occurs that signals the start of the winter season: the winter solstice. But what exactly happens, and when does it occur? Here’s everything you need to know about this event.

In December, a remarkable astronomical phenomenon takes place beyond our atmosphere: the winter solstice. This event is linked to the Earth’s position relative to the Sun, marking the transition from fall to winter and representing the shortest day of the year.

What is the Date of the Winter Solstice in 2024?

According to the Institute of Celestial Mechanics and Ephemeris Calculation (IMCCE), the winter solstice in 2024 will occur on Saturday, December 21, at exactly 10:20:35 AM TLF, as noted in the organization’s annual calendar. Typically, the solstice happens on December 21, although in some years it can exceptionally fall on the 22nd or 23rd of December.

What is the Winter Solstice?

The winter solstice not only marks the longest night but also the shortest day of the year. The night lasts for 16 hours, leaving only 8 hours of “daylight”. In France, the winter solstice occurs when “the Earth is tilted such that the Northern Hemisphere is farthest from the Sun” and therefore receives less light, explains Mathilde Gaunel, a researcher at the Paris Observatory, in an interview with GEO. She also notes that “our winter solstice coincides with the summer solstice in the south, which explains why it’s winter in the north when it’s summer in the south.”

What are the Rituals Associated with the Winter Solstice?

In some cultures, it was customary to celebrate the winter solstice with rituals. Historically, it was a pagan festival marking the cycle of the seasons, like the Yule festival among Germanic peoples. However, with the rise of Christianity, most of these rituals were supplanted by Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus. Today, some communities continue to honor this tradition by lighting candles, exchanging homemade gifts, and creating fires and wreaths from plants.

What is the Difference Between the Solstice and the Equinox?

Contrary to what one might think, the solstice and the equinox are two distinct astronomical events. Although both are related to the Earth’s tilt relative to the Sun, they differ significantly. Due to this tilt, the sun’s rays hit the hemispheres at varying angles, causing the cycle of seasons. The equinox occurs when day and night are of equal length, whereas the solstice, during winter, marks the shortest day, and in summer, the longest.
