INTERVIEW: Kate Mills Talks New Single ‘Honest Mistakes’

Rising New York-based singer-songwriter Kate Mills has spent several years chasing her music dream whilst working as a Social Worker and is now ready to catapult her singing career with the release of her brand new single ‘Honest Mistakes’. The slick, lyrically stunning track is the very first to be lifted off her forthcoming debut album, which promises to be one of the most exciting new releases when it drops.

Here we speak to Kate Mills to discuss the ‘Honest Mistakes’ single:

How are you finding the response to your new single so far?
The response has been really encouraging! I mean, full disclosure, the dreamer in me had these delusions of grandeur that within 24 hours of being released the song would go viral somehow propel me into country-music stardom lol! That hasn’t happened yet haha. But, lots of people are listening and sharing, and most importantly, connecting with the song, so that makes me really happy.

What was the inspiration behind ‘Honest Mistakes’?
The main inspiration for this song came about a year and a half ago when I found out a dear family member was being sent to prison for some things he had done while struggling with drug addiction. He is a good person whom I care about and love so much, but he made some pretty terrible choices. I felt really inspired to write this a bit from his perspective, and it helped me process my own complex feeling about the situation. In doing so I realized I’m not really any different. I also struggle to make the right choices all the time and be the person I want to be, so even though it didn’t start out about me, it feels very personal.

What do you hope listeners take from the track?
I hope that this song helps listeners to connect with their own humanity and the humanity of others. None of us is perfect, and good people make bad choices sometimes. So I think I hope this song inspires listeners to have more empathy and grace, for themselves, and those around them.

What was the overall writing process like for the single?
This song took a long time to write! The hook of the song, the line of the chorus that says, “I’ve lived my life in such a way that I can’t afford to make even honest mistakes” came first. But I didn’t really know how to develop it from there. Once everything happened with my family member going to prison, the song came together. I was able to really put myself in his shoes and tap into my own complicated feeling about the situation and put it into the song. And that really is the heart of it. People are complicated. We aren’t just good or bad, loveable or unloveable. We are all both, and I really wanted to get that across in the song.

Do you plan on releasing a music video for the song?
Nothing big and fancy. But I am working on a little DIY video, so we’ll see how that turns out!

This is the first song off your debut LP, when can we expect that to be released?
I am so so excited about it! It will come at the beginning of 2020. We have been working so hard on this album for such a long time! But we have a few more fun musical surprises up our sleeves before then.

The UK Country scene is growing, can we expect a tour from you in the future?
I would LOVE to come to the UK! I spent quite a bit of time there when I was in college and it still holds such a special place in my heart. I’m hoping to do a UK and European tour sometime in 2020, after the album comes out. So if you’ve got any connections let me know.

What does the rest of 2019 look like for you?
Ahh, the last 90 days of the year! It’s actually very exciting! There will a lot happening behind the scenes to get ready for the album launch, as well as planning more shows and tours. But the next big thing to happen is releasing the 2nd single from the album in November!! So stay tuned for “Outrun the Night.”
