Current Oscar Contenders

The sequel “Inside Out 2” (Pixar/Disney) has emerged as a frontrunner for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, having grossed $1.6 billion globally and marking a significant theatrical comeback for Pixar following a period of lower performance. Other leading contenders are “The Wild Robot” (DreamWorks/Universal), “Memoir of a Snail” (IFC), which won the Annecy and Animation Is Film Special Jury Prize, “Flow” (Sideshow/Janus Films), winner of the Ottawa and Animation Is Film Grand Prize, and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” (Aardman/Netflix).

Anticipated future releases include “Moana 2” (Disney) and “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” (Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line), adding to an already competitive lineup.

However, potential dark horses in the race are “Ultraman: Rising” (Netflix), a sci-fi adventure reimagining the classic anime series by first-time director Shannon Tindle, and “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” featuring Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in a 2D animated sci-fi adventure, which Ketchup Entertainment is releasing theatrically after acquiring it from Warner Bros. Discovery. It will first appear at the Animation Is Film Festival before its official theatrical release on February 28, 2025.

In “Inside Out 2,” directed by Kelsey Mann, the narrative introduces Anxiety as a new emotion for 13-year-old Riley, voiced by Maya Hawke. The film’s success is driven by the emotional resonance and innovative character dynamics between Anxiety and characters like Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). Amy Poehler’s Joy teams up with Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) in an attempt to restore balance to Riley’s emotional landscape.

“The Wild Robot,” directed by Chris Sanders, stands out as the leading non-sequel contender. The film adapts Peter Brown’s book about Roz the robot (Lupita Nyong’o), who learns to live among wild animals after being stranded on a deserted island. DreamWorks has crafted a visually stunning film, blending traditional 2D aesthetics with modern technology.

“Memoir of a Snail” is a poignant stop-motion feature by Adam Elliot, detailing the life of Gracie (Sarah Snook), a woman who overcomes personal trauma with the help of her snail friends. This film follows Elliot’s tradition of melancholic storytelling through detailed claymation.

“Flow,” directed by Gints Zilbalodis, is a unique, dialogue-free film that depicts a group of animals navigating a post-apocalyptic flood. The film’s animation blends soft-rendered characters with crisp environmental textures, creating a visually immersive experience.

“Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” brings back Aardman’s beloved characters in a new adventure involving a rogue smart gnome and the notorious penguin, Feathers McGraw.

“Ultraman: Rising” explores themes of parenthood and balance through the adventures of baseball star Ken Sato (Christopher Sean), who juggles his responsibilities as Ultraman with caring for a giant baby kaiju.

“The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” returns to classic 2D animation, featuring Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in a globe-trotting adventure to thwart an alien invasion.

“Piece by Piece” is a documentary about Pharrell Williams, uniquely presented through LEGO animation, combining interviews and musical sequences to explore his artistic journey.
