All romantic relationships encounter rough patches. However, when effort, tension, and misunderstandings become constant, emotional fatigue may set in. Recognizing the signs is a crucial first step. Psychologist Maïté Tranzer offers her insights.

Feeling drained, anxious before going home, or lacking the energy to communicate are not trivial matters. These feelings could indicate that a relationship is depleting your emotional reserves. According to psychologist Maïté Tranzer, it’s vital to “pay attention to all the subtle signals, anything that causes discomfort or negative emotions. Listen to your body and be able to name your emotions to understand them better.”

Constantly Making Efforts

While it’s normal to make occasional efforts in a relationship, it’s important to be cautious if these efforts are ongoing, as explained by the expert: “If it doesn’t become natural, if you’re constantly making efforts for the other person and feel out of sync because the expectations don’t align with your desires, then it’s something to worry about.”

Persistent Fatigue

If you feel drained and lack energy, it could be a sign that your relationship is wearing you down. “When you adapt to the other person, you can feel tired because you’re constantly alert to the signals and emotions the other person sends back,” observes Maïté Tranzer. “It can be challenging because you lose access to your own needs in favor of the other’s.”

Not Feeling Like Yourself

This is a crucial point to note. Do you feel that your partner doesn’t accept you as you are? If you need to adjust your behavior to suit someone else, it can be truly exhausting. “It’s something to regularly question: does the other person accept me with my flaws and vulnerabilities?” emphasizes the psychologist. “If you’re not being yourself, you can’t be fulfilled. You then put yourself on guard and feel misunderstood and unconsidered,” warns the expert.

Always Feeling Stressed

It’s worthwhile to pay attention to your body because if the relationship stresses you out, beyond fatigue, other signs might appear. “This can lead to psychosomatic issues. The body speaks: you might experience sleep problems, stomach aches…” adds Maïté Tranzer.

Walking on Eggshells

This hypervigilance can be a source of exhaustion. “If you always have to be careful about your behavior, about what you say… It prevents letting go,” notes the psychologist. “This self-control means that you’re holding back to avoid tensions and conflicts.”

If you feel this misalignment, Maïté Tranzer advises taking time to reflect on whether you still feel good in your relationship. If you’re experiencing this fatigue, it might be helpful “to identify the source to determine if it’s a reaction to a relationship problem that can be resolved, or if it’s something deeper. Don’t forget that a relationship should be easy and fluid,” concludes the psychologist.
