A kindergarten teacher suggests that the real solution to head lice isn’t found in a bottle, but through a simple act that halts the spread—and the Thanksgiving break offers a perfect opportunity to eradicate them.
The weeks following the start of school are prime time for head lice, especially among younger children. In kindergartens and elementary schools, kids play closely together, hug each other, and share hats, scarves, hair ties, or caps—all perfect opportunities for lice to move from one child to another. These wingless parasites can only move through direct contact, while their eggs, or nits, cling tightly to hair and hatch days later, continuing the cycle. Consequently, just one infested head can lead to an entire class becoming contaminated.
In response to these seasonal outbreaks, parents quickly turn to lotions, fine-toothed combs, and essential oils. Suffocating shampoos, dimethicone-based products, and natural remedies all claim to eliminate lice and nits. However, according to Lisa, a kindergarten teacher with ten years of experience, “treatment alone is not enough“. She witnesses the same pattern every year: despite the treatments applied, the pests reappear a few days later. “It’s expected, she explains. As long as not all children are treated at the same time, lice continue to spread. Parents should not feel embarrassed to discuss it; on the contrary,” she adds.
For her, the key is communication. As soon as a case is detected, parents should immediately inform the school, the teacher, and other families, either through a collective message or a WhatsApp group. “This collective response is crucial, Lisa emphasizes. If everyone treats their child at the same time, it breaks the chain of contagion. Otherwise, we’re just going in circles for weeks“. She notes that the Thanksgiving break comes at just the right time: “It’s the perfect period for a thorough cleaning, treating everyone’s hair, washing bed linens, stuffed animals, and starting fresh.”
To minimize risks, it’s best to keep long hair tied up, avoid sharing hats or brushes, and regularly use a fine-toothed comb, even without noticeable itching. Some child-friendly anti-lice lotions can also help eliminate lice and nits. And if the little critters persist despite these efforts, there’s no need to panic: an infestation is not a sign of poor hygiene. The real solution is solidarity among parents. This, far more than any miracle shampoo, truly stops lice from spreading in schools.
