Some children make such astute observations at an early age that we might not take them seriously, assuming they are just repeating something they heard. But where do they pick up such insightful ideas?

No one admits to having said these things, and these children are still too young to read well enough to have found them in a newspaper or a book that their parents haven’t yet opened… They are only three years old and their reading is still quite laborious. Sometimes, adults recall these comments, which seem too coincidental to ignore, especially if it happens repeatedly. They are amazed and perhaps prefer to avoid delving deeper into a reaction they completely fail to understand and cannot control.

Ignoring Their Insightful Comments

The gifted child speaks their mind and soon realizes that adults do not take their observations seriously: they seem surprised, but continue acting as if they heard nothing. The child simply wanted to start a conversation about a seemingly ordinary topic, expecting a normal response from their parents, not for them to disregard his remark. Depending on the child’s temperament, they may resign themselves to this or become annoyed, but their environment continues to overlook their input, attributing their reactions to mere coincidence without realizing that these don’t occur randomly.

Adults Forget How to Form Original Thoughts

If these adults were to dive deep into their distant memories, they would recall experiencing the same frustrations when they were not listened to, even though they persisted to warn the adults about something important that was about to happen. They would remember how they gradually stopped talking to no one in particular, or perhaps only to their pets or favorite toys, just so their thoughts were expressed somehow.

They have forgotten the paths they took to reach those conclusions and why subsequent events proved them right. Eventually, they desired to blend in rather than express what their inner voice inspired, since clearly, the adults were not interested.

Conforming to Common Thought

They embraced common thinking, a mindset dictated by a type of wisdom that presides over giving up. They no longer surprised anyone; they spoke like other children their age, carefully choosing the right words and adhering to syntax that wouldn’t betray their thoughts, striving to keep their thoughts within the bounds of ordinariness. They stopped worrying.

Signs Visible from Birth

There are numerous signs from the birth of a gifted child that could alert their parents, who notice them but don’t investigate further. The intensity of these babies’ gazes is notable; they soon behave like remarkable observers, scrutinizing their surroundings and immediately beginning to link certain events together, associating and even interpreting them to make sense of all the information they gather.

This forms the bulk of their activity when they are not sleeping: they absorb a multitude of data, tiny and barely noticeable, except to the fresh minds of babies. They retain this information because it will be useful for understanding what’s happening around them and preparing themselves. From their earliest age, they develop a habit of remembering what seems crucial and linking it to other related data. They capture the feelings and emotions of those close to them and even those further away, as if they could alter the air quality: the tone of voices, reactions to unusual sounds, or to information later discussed.

These minute bits of data together can lead to a predictable event. When these children can express themselves, often at a very young age, they inform the adults around them of their conclusions, eager to contribute usefully to life’s proceedings.

A Rigorous Logic Underpins Their Rapid Thought

With astonishing accuracy and relentless rigor, they arrive at the most logical conclusion from everything they have perceived. They follow their intuition, which cannot be wrong and does not require verification, skipping the steps of purely logical reasoning that must progress systematically to avoid errors. Their thought is guided by a brilliance that asserts itself, difficult to explain in detail. All the data leading to this unique conclusion are linked with a speed beyond control, and this conclusion imposes itself with absolute certainty.

For gifted children, this thought process is entirely natural; they cannot fathom others questioning their ideas, which seem as simple as truths no one would think to challenge. They are then surprised when their ideas are not heeded, not taken seriously, and they begin to doubt the value of their thoughts. Most adults, who are their role models, do not think this way; they think slowly and refer to preconceived notions found externally. Their own thought processes are no longer entirely their own; they borrow without questioning, as these ideas are accepted by the majority and thus considered safe.

What a relief it is when they encounter an adult who operates the same way; they follow a similar thought process, without even needing to outline each step. This adult is often a family member—it’s a family trait—but the adult has imposed constraints to avoid being overly different. They no longer trust themselves, they are wary.

Gradually, gifted children become more cautious when expressing their ideas; after all, they were not believed. They consider it safer, wiser, less risky to act like everyone else, suppressing the brilliance that once flowed through them so easily.

Finally, they are like the others, echoing the dominant ideas with conviction, silencing their inner voice, but they cannot entirely shake off a subtle reservation; they are not completely fooled by what they repeat in unison, glad not to stand out, yet frustrated at having to curb their way of thinking and especially frightened when they sense a disaster that no one else sees coming.

Some manage to maintain a disguised use of this mode of being through artistic creation, where they can express their profound thoughts. All forms of art lend themselves to this: painting, music, and the prime channel of literature. Here, everything is permitted; they weren’t forced to keep such an important message to themselves. “Let those who have ears hear…” There are professions where this quality is useful, but it remains discreet, and these successes are attributed to luck, a fortunate coincidence, or sheer mastery of the craft.

Advice: It is always advisable to listen to children when they say surprising things. This doesn’t mean they should be considered oracles, but it is better not to stifle the expression of their deep thoughts by fostering constant doubt instead.
