Darren Criss of “Glee” fame and the celebrated drag queen Trixie Mattel are set to add their flair to the Off-Broadway performances. The show features Linus Karp and Joseph Martin, who not only wrote the play but also star as the central figures: Gwyneth Paltrow and her courtroom opponent, optometrist Terry Sanderson.
Having entertained audiences in London and Park City, Utah—where the actual incident occurred—the play is scheduled to run at the Soho Playhouse from January 20 through January 26, revisiting the nearly two-year-old courtroom saga.
Audience Connection and Societal Commentary
The creators, Karp and Martin, shared with Page Six that the trial’s absurdity was a source of amusement online, which has helped maintain its relevance in public memory. They noted, “The trial brought such hilarity and joy to people online, and luckily for us, people online do not forget, as the audiences at our shows still very much remember the most memorable moments and quotes.”
Explaining the minimal stakes of the trial, they recalled Paltrow’s now-famous remark about the incident’s impact on her: “well, I lost half a day of skiing.”
When queried about the incident’s particular resonance within the queer community, the pair explained, “When a blonde Hollywood star enters a small-town district court in the Utah mountains, with the glamour, grace, and ‘goopiness’ that she did, the queers have no choice but to stan; and will rightfully appreciate the moment better than any straight person ever could, no offence.”
They further highlighted that the narrative resonates as it showcases a strong, independent woman standing up against an older, white, heterosexual male, embodying a fight for justice (and her half day of skiing).
Star-Studded Musical Contributions
The musical numbers were penned by drag icon Leland, with Criss and Cat Cohen lending their vocal talents to Paltrow and Sanderson respectively. Trixie Mattel makes a special appearance as Paltrow’s mother, Blythe Danner.
Despite some saying that Off-Broadway has seen better days, this show proves that there’s plenty of creativity left on the smaller stage. Tickets are available for $40.
In a 2019 legal twist, Sanderson sued the “Shakespeare in Love” actress for $300,000, accusing her of causing him a brain injury during their 2016 encounter at Deer Valley ski resort. In response, Paltrow countersued for a symbolic $1 plus legal fees, asserting that Sanderson was the actual culprit in the crash. Ultimately, Paltrow won the case.
