Don’t fool yourself, says our psychologist.
The end of a romantic relationship and the emptiness it leaves can be incredibly hard to cope with. “Some people wish the breakup is just a temporary break,” observes Claire Petin, a psychologist. Indeed, “starting over can be frightening, or the breakup could seem utterly senseless.” However, clinging to false hopes is not advisable. “We must accept that we might not get all the answers,” the expert advises. Here are the signs that confirm they are not coming back:
- If they no longer respond to your messages, calls, or any attempts to communicate, and have blocked you across all platforms: “This lack of communication indicates that the person has accepted the end of the relationship and does not want to create any ambiguity,” explains the psychologist. “It might also show a need to protect oneself from the temptation of returning and to focus on personal growth,” adds the professional.
- They have started seeing someone else and are openly showcasing their new relationship on social media and with their loved ones: “Your ex has emotionally moved on, which has enabled them to invest in a new relationship. By posting on social media and publicly displaying their new partner, they are signaling to everyone that they have definitively moved on.”
- The other person let the relationship deteriorate and pushed you to end it: “This shows cowardice and a deep disrespect for the relationship,” analyzes Claire Petin. “By making you responsible for ending the relationship, this avoidance behavior indicates it’s unlikely they will reinvest in the relationship.”
- The other person was firm during the breakup: If the decision was well thought out, an ex might be very decisive in declaring the breakup, leaving no room for hope. “If there is no ambiguity, there is no hope for reconciliation. This resolve could be even more pronounced if there was a loss of trust through betrayal or failings,” the psychologist specifies.
“When you feel sadness, anger, and regret, it can be hard to move on. If this period is too challenging, don’t hesitate to seek help from a mental health professional,” suggests our expert, ending on a positive and realistic note: “A breakup can also bring peace, the freedom to be oneself, and open the door to new love.”
