Before the festival began, organizers announced updates to the dress code in the festival’s official guidelines.
This year, they have imposed restrictions on overly revealing or excessively large attire, stating, “To maintain decorum, nudity is forbidden on the red carpet and all other festival zones.”
The guidelines further state, “Outfits with extensive volume, especially those featuring a long train, are also banned as they disrupt the movement of attendees and create difficulties in seating arrangements within the theater.”
Strict Entry Rules
The rules come with a stern warning: “Festival reception staff will strictly enforce these dress code rules and deny red carpet access to those who do not comply.”
Traditional evening attire still remains mandatory, specifying either a “long dress” or a “tuxedo.” Alternatives such as a cocktail dress, “dark-colored pantsuit,” or “fancy blouse with black trousers” are also acceptable.
On the topic of men’s fashion, Cannes organizers have previously been known to reject outfits that are deemed “too colorful.”
Footwear has been a contentious issue at the festival, highlighted in 2018 when Kristen Stewart famously removed her heels to protest the mandatory high heel policy. It seems the organizers have relaxed the footwear rules since then.
According to the updated charter, “Stylish shoes and sandals, whether heeled or not, are permitted.” (However, it’s likely that Jennifer Lawrence’s flip-flops are still not acceptable.)
The updated regulations have already impacted celebrities such as Halle Berry, who had to change her gown last minute for the opening ceremony because its train was considered too large.
Cannes has been a platform for daring fashion, although always within certain boundaries.
Celebrity Fashion Highlights
Bella Hadid, in particular, has been a standout in recent years for her daring choices on the Cannes red carpet. This includes her famous 2016 red Alexandre Vauthier gown with an extreme slit and her bold 2021 Schiaparelli haute couture gown that featured a gold “lungs” design instead of a top.
Hadid continued to make waves with her return last year in an entirely sheer Saint Laurent dress after taking a break for a year.
Despite the new restrictions, we can still anticipate plenty of spectacular moments on the Cannes red carpet, even if they come without the extravagant trains.
