This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Every day, roughly 70,000 people make a stop here, and it’s definitely worth a visit!
Highway rest stops are essential breaks on long drives to vacation destinations. At ten o’clock, noon, or four o’clock, these areas become necessary pit stops: travelers pause to stretch, use the restroom, or grab a bite before hitting the road again. Every summer, millions of drivers pass through these stops, and naturally, some are busier than others, especially during major holiday getaways.
In France, there are approximately 364 service areas and 637 rest areas as reported by the ASFA (Association of French Motorway Companies). Service areas provide substantial comfort for breaks: they offer food services, fuel, restrooms, and sometimes even shops and outdoor play areas for children. On the other hand, rest areas are more basic, equipped only with restrooms, picnic tables, and parking for a quick stop. Among all these stops, do you know which one is the busiest?
Here’s a hint: it’s located on a highway that almost always turns red on the traffic forecasts each summer. Yes, it’s the A7, famously known as the “Autoroute du Soleil.” The service area in question is Montélimar. This spot is one of the most frequented in France, as told to us by the press office of Vinci Autoroutes. In “summer, an average of over 70,000 people stop there every day… It’s like a medium-sized city being rebuilt every day”, they explained. And it’s not just the numbers that make it stand out… During the summer, it transforms into a kind of holiday village, with free sports activities for all ages offered as part of Vinci Autoroutes’ summer initiatives.
This is also one of the largest highway rest areas in Europe. It’s designed as a true relaxation space for vacationers. Here, you can find all the amenities expected of a modern service area: a gas station, electric charging stations, a variety of dining options (McDonald’s, Starbucks, Brioche Dorée, O’Tacos), free wifi, showers, a children’s play area, a tire inflation station, and even a secure truck parking area. The area also promotes the local gastronomic heritage with products from a dozen traditional nougat makers.
