Individuals over the age of 65 are increasingly embracing the use of sex toys, according to a recent survey.
Sex toys are becoming more popular across all age groups, including the elderly, and this is a positive trend. Why should pleasure be off-limits just because someone is over 60? As life expectancy increases, people are living longer and healthier lives, removing any reason to deny themselves sexual enjoyment. “The use of sex toys, once limited to a minority, is now widespread in France, among young and old, singles and couples alike,” states sextoy manufacturer Lelo in a survey conducted by OpinionWay. According to the survey, one in four French people owns a sex toy (maybe you, your best friend, or your sister-in-law or brother-in-law?). Lelo adds, “Sex toys are not just for solo play; they also enhance couple relationships.”
The term “seniors” refers to individuals aged 65 and older. The OpinionWay survey for Lelo indicates that one in ten seniors now uses a sex toy, “a figure that has significantly increased over the past decades.” “Seniors increasingly view sex toys as tools for fulfillment, helping to extend their sexual lives and diversify their experiences. This late adoption reflects a shift in attitudes, where sexuality is no longer seen as a topic exclusive to younger generations.” Interestingly, 24% of users (of all ages) were introduced to sex toys by friends, and 19% through pornography. The promotion of sex toys on social media also contributes to their democratization.
Single or partnered? According to the survey, 25% of sex toy users are single and 26% are in a relationship. Thus, the use of sex toys is not confined to solo pleasure. While they can be used alone by those in relationships (a great way to better understand one’s body), the study shows that couples also integrate these accessories to spice up their sex lives, increase intimacy, and diversify experiences. “Men are increasingly open to using sex toys in their relationships, with 27% reporting the use of accessories to stimulate their partners,” reports the manufacturer in a press release.
One in Three Users Expect an Orgasm
As the number of users grows, so does their level of expectation. One in three users now expects their sex toy to guarantee an orgasm. Additionally, 25% of users prioritize the quality of materials and durability of the product, reflecting a growing demand for high-end and body-safe sex toys. Other factors influencing user expectations include affordability, desired by 20% of consumers, while 16% value a sleek and discreet design. Lastly, a small niche of 2% of users shows interest in more “adventurous” and unusual toys, like alien-themed or textured models.
However, one device continues to win the favor of both young and old users alike—the vibrator (the famous toy known for its vibrating massages and stimulation of the clitoris, vagina, etc.). It is preferred by 66% of those aged 65 and older for its ease of use and rapid effectiveness in providing pleasure. Whether used solo or during couple activities, the vibrator remains the most popular sex toy in France, with 55% of users (across all ages) favoring it over other types of accessories. Other popular sex toys include dildos (27%), rabbits (26%), and non-penetrative sex toys such as sonic wave stimulators (25%). What’s your favorite?
