More older women are turning to sex toys, a large American survey reveals.
Women over the age of 60 are embracing their sexual freedom, and it’s a positive development. According to a comprehensive study conducted by the Kinsey Institute involving 3001 women, there’s a notable increase in sex toy usage among this demographic, particularly for masturbation, providing them immense pleasure… especially with one toy in particular.
The participants, mostly aged between 60 to 69 years, completed an online questionnaire about their sexual activities, both solo and with a partner. The researchers aimed to assess how frequently these women use sex toys, in what contexts, and whether it affects their orgasmic experiences and sexual desire. One key finding was that sex toys play a significantly larger role in solo sexual activities than in partnered sex. Of the women who masturbated at least once over the past year, over half (56.4%) used a sex toy at least occasionally, and nearly one in two use them always or almost always. Conversely, among those who had sexual encounters with a partner, only 38.7% reported using a sex toy at least rarely, and a mere 5% used them consistently.
The study also highlighted a clear connection between the frequency of sex toy use and achieving orgasm: women who frequently used sex toys alone reached orgasm “much more often” than those who rarely or never used them. The pattern holds in partnered scenarios, although the impact is somewhat less pronounced. Another significant observation is that women who use sex toys for masturbation also often express a desire for more sexual activity, indicating a strong, ongoing sexual desire.
So, what is their favorite sex toy? For masturbation, nearly two-thirds of users prefer an external vibrator, which stimulates the vulva and/or clitoris. About 40% also use a dildo or another penetrative toy. The same types of toys are popular during partnered sex, with the external vibrator again taking the lead. Other accessories, such as anal plugs, cock rings, or bondage gear, are rarely used by those over 60. The researchers suggest that sex toys are helpful for addressing common issues that arise with aging, such as vaginal dryness, pain, or decreased erection firmness in male partners.
This study confirms that desire and pleasure do not end with menopause. And that’s a good thing since orgasms are beneficial for health. Beyond providing joy and well-being, orgasms are linked to better sleep quality, reduced stress, and even pain relief. Older women often hesitate to discuss sexuality with their doctors, and healthcare providers seldom initiate conversations on the topic. Using sex toys is a great way for them to reclaim their bodies, care for themselves, and enjoy pleasure, whether alone or with someone. For some, it might even be their first time. But as the saying goes, better late than never, right?
