When a relationship begins, the inevitable question arises: do I really love this person? A study has explored how many times we experience true love in our lifetime.

The term “love” is used in many different contexts. It might refer to the beginning of a relationship, a strong attachment, or a profound passion. However, researchers often make a distinction between romantic relationships and those exceptional times when feelings of love become especially deep. A recent survey focused precisely on this phenomenon.

To conduct the study, researchers surveyed over 10,000 single adults ranging from 18 to 99 years old. The aim was not to count the number of relationships or romantic encounters, but to identify those specific moments when individuals felt an exceptionally strong love. Participants were asked to recall how many times they experienced love that they considered intense and transformative, essentially the moments they thought, “I’m in love.” Data were gathered through in-depth individual interviews, allowing for a discussion of experiences and avoiding quick, simplistic answers typically found in questionnaires.

The findings clearly show that love experiences vary greatly from person to person. In the survey, 14% of respondents claimed they never felt such strong love. Meanwhile, 28% said they experienced this profound love only once. A significant portion of the group recounted multiple instances throughout their lives.

According to the survey results, 30% of participants reported feeling intense love twice, while 17% experienced it three times. A smaller segment of the group, 11%, claimed to have had four or more such experiences. After compiling all the responses and calculating an average, the researchers concluded that people fall deeply in love twice in their lifetime, even though they may have more relationships. Recognizing a dependable long-term partner enhances this experience even further.

This study did not attempt to evaluate the quality or durability of a relationship. A lasting relationship can exist without experiencing extremely intense love. Conversely, some emotionally intense relationships may be brief. Finally, the study reminds us that love can take many forms, and not all significant relationships are based on such dramatic feelings.
