The showcase of happiness can quickly turn toxic.
With over a billion active users, TikTok is flooded with videos depicting seemingly perfect relationships. “These videos promote unrealistic and idealized standards of what a romantic relationship should be like. They lead users to compare themselves to these models, feeling a gap between their own realities and these ideal images,” explains Virginie Clarenc, a therapist and sexologist. Such content often glosses over everyday challenges like arguments, frustrations, or compromises, which are all essential parts of a relationship. “It makes our own relationships feel unsatisfactory or insufficient,” she notes. These constant comparisons feed insecurity and frustration.
The Algorithm: A Saboteur of Attention and Quality Time
TikTok’s success is driven by a highly effective algorithm. By analyzing user preferences, it offers a continuous stream of captivating videos. However, this feature has a downside. “The algorithm captures the user’s attention in an almost hypnotic manner, particularly encroaching on the quality time spent with their partner,” warns Virginie Clarenc. This hyperconnectivity can lead to tension within relationships. “If someone spends too much time on TikTok, their partner might feel neglected or unimportant. This harms communication and the feeling of being understood and valued,” adds the sexologist, confirming that excessive social media use contributes to misunderstandings and reduced satisfaction in relationships.
A Source of Jealousy and Accumulated Insecurity
TikTok impacts not just the time couples spend together but also plays on insecurities within the relationship, particularly by creating situations of jealousy. “Digital interactions, such as likes or comments on videos, can be seen as micro betrayals, especially when the content is highly sexualized,” the therapist cautions. These behaviors can foster feelings of insecurity, especially when interactions occur frequently with strangers or influencers. “It can seem like the partner is fantasizing about other people, which undermines trust in the relationship.” Even couples who create videos together are not spared. “Some think that creating content as a duo will lessen tensions. However, this can also lead to constant pressure to appear perfect online, at the expense of their authenticity,” she points out.
TikTok is full of personal development advice, offering cookie-cutter methods to “succeed” in love life. These videos, often very brief, oversimplify complex subjects. “This content sometimes guilt-trips couples, urging them to follow ‘universal recipes’ for happiness. Yet, each relationship is unique and should be built according to the specific needs and values of the partners,” insists Virginie Clarenc. By trying to conform to these standards, couples risk drifting apart. “A relationship can’t be built on a generic recipe or through a screen. It requires mutual attention and genuine interaction,” she adds.
Despite these risks, Virginie Clarenc emphasizes the need for nuance: “TikTok isn’t inherently bad. It all depends on how it’s used. It’s important to consider the qualifications of those giving advice. A one-minute video is not enough to thoroughly address complex topics like romantic relationships.” It should be used in moderation: “Romantic relationships require real attention, and this can only be achieved through direct exchange, without a screen interfering.”
