Even after getting approval for CMG, payments can still be held up for weeks — and the hold-up often comes down to a monthly form many parents don’t know about.

This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
A new dad discovered this the hard way when his infant daughter started at a micro-crèche. He had arranged ahead of time: he filed for the CMG (the childcare allowance supplement) with the CAF (France’s family benefits office) back in August, and the claim was processed before childcare began in October. He paid the first invoice on the 10th of the month, and everything looked in order — at least on paper.
But when he checked his upcoming payments, the roughly €700 he was counting on hadn’t arrived, he reported on Reddit. Instead, his CAF account showed the message “attestation mensuelle non fournie” (monthly certificate not provided). No one had mentioned this requirement to him and he never received a form to complete. After calling CAF he was simply told to send the daycare invoice, which he did — yet the uncertainty remained. Having already spent €1,440, waiting another month or two for reimbursement is more than a minor administrative annoyance.
The missing item in situations like this is often the monthly CMG attestation. For certain micro-crèches that qualify for CMG as a “structure,” the CAF needs specific information about the actual childcare for each month to release the payment. The attestation details the care period, the hours attended, and the amount billed. Some micro-crèches submit these monthly details directly to the CAF; others hand the attestation to parents, who must then forward it themselves. That difference in procedure explains why two families receiving the same benefit can feel like they’re following completely different instructions. CAF confirms that micro-crèches may transmit the monthly data via an electronic declaration service.
That procedural variation is exactly why many parents miss the first month’s payment. They might have correctly applied for CMG and received approval, but CAF still requires the month-by-month information showing the actual care provided before sending money. In other words, getting the entitlement set up and getting the monthly payment are two distinct steps. Until the monthly data has been received and processed, payments can remain pending.
The easiest way to avoid this is to ask the daycare upfront: “Do you submit the CMG information to the CAF each month, or is that something I need to do?” That question can prevent a lot of back-and-forth among the crèche, CAF, and the online accounts. The good news is that a processing delay usually doesn’t mean the month’s payment is lost forever — parents are typically reimbursed the following month.
