On the anniversary of River’s death, who famously succumbed to an overdose in 1993 at the age of 23, Rain shared a reflective essay. Initially, she coped by distancing herself from the pain, but later realized that this method might have disconnected her from her brother’s memory.
She expressed in her writing for Another Jane Pratt Thing, “Now, 32 years and numerous losses later, I find myself deeply intrigued by the notions of death, mourning, and societal attitudes towards them.”
Embracing the Death-Positive Movement
The actress and musician discussed her engagement with the death-positive movement, which promotes open discussions about death, dying, and the deceased. She suggests that a deeper engagement with the topic of death could potentially enhance overall life satisfaction.
Rain, who is also the sister of Academy Award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix, mentioned that the heightened awareness of mortality during the early days of the pandemic spurred her anxiety, leading her to enroll in an online course on becoming a death doula, alongside composing numerous songs.
According to the International End of Life Doula Association, a death doula supports individuals nearing death and their families by guiding them through the end-of-life process.
Alongside her essay, she shared a never-before-seen photo of her and River, believed to have been captured by acclaimed director Gus Van Sant, adding a personal touch to her reflections.
