This is the focus of a study by a team of American researchers. Their goal: to identify a universal, common, and telling behavior that clearly indicates romantic interest. Their findings were published in the prestigious journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, shedding new light on what happens in the initial moments of a romantic encounter.

The researchers analyzed two theories. The first suggests that certain signals, like humor, serve to display one’s “value,” much like a peacock fanning its feathers. Being funny, therefore, might be a sign of good mental health, intelligence, or creativity—traits of “good genes.” The second theory is simpler: making someone laugh is primarily a way to show interest and to gauge the other person’s response. To decide between these, the team conducted three different studies involving hundreds of participants. They observed interactions between men and women, measured the frequency of certain behaviors, and noted the reactions of the participants. These experiments ranged from controlled lab situations to more casual social conversations.

The results were clear: when a man is attracted to a woman, he makes more efforts to make her laugh. Moreover, he also tends to laugh more at her jokes, even if they are not particularly outstanding. Humor thus serves as a dual signal: initiating a joke is a way of saying “I’m interested in you,” and responding positively to it signifies a tacit agreement. In other words, if a man laughs with you and tries to make you smile, it’s not just to lighten the mood. It’s a sign, often unconscious, of genuine attraction. The researchers call this the “interest-indicator model”: humor acts as an indicator of romantic interest.

While these findings do not provide a foolproof test—everyone is unique, and humor can also be used to hide nervousness or to shine in social settings—they are robust: in all three studies, men and women found the other person funnier when they were already attracted to them, and were more likely to initiate humor in such cases. Simply put, if a man laughs at your jokes and tries to make you laugh, chances are his interest goes beyond mere politeness. This isn’t a guarantee of everlasting love, but it is a scientifically validated marker of how attraction manifests in the early stages of a relationship.
