Many dog owners overlook this important step before heading out for a walk.
This simple action concerning your dog’s collar can prevent a severe accident. While most owners remember to check the leash, they often neglect a crucial detail: adjusting the collar. This common oversight can turn an ordinary walk into an emergency situation. British dog trainer Josh highlights this frequent scenario. A dog, spooked and trying to escape, can slip out of its collar in an instant.
The issue does not arise from the collar’s material, be it nylon or leather, but from how it is worn daily and fastened. When startled by a sudden noise or another dog, the animal’s instinct is often to pull back. If the collar isn’t adjusted to prevent this, it can easily slip over the head. Then, the dog is suddenly loose, often near busy streets and oncoming traffic. “This could literally save your dog’s life. If the collar slips over its head that easily, it’s dangerous,” warns Josh.
To mitigate this risk, the trainer advises a simple test: the “two-finger rule.” The collar should be tight enough to prevent escape while still allowing two flat fingers to fit between the strap and the neck. This check takes only a few seconds and can make a walk in the great outdoors with your pet much safer.
Beyond adjusting the collar, consider using an anti-escape harness (with an additional belly strap) for particularly skittish dogs or those with slender builds, like greyhounds. Also, regularly inspect the condition of plastic buckles and carabiners, which can weaken due to cold or salt in winter. Finally, ensure that the identification tag is clearly legible and that the information linked to the microchip is up-to-date, because even with the best equipment, there is no such thing as zero risk.
