“Saturday Night Live” writer Ceara O’Sullivan is an avid reader, with no book that she doesn’t enjoy.
“Reading is my passion,” she shares with Page Six, noting that fantasy and memoirs are her preferred genres.
“I’ve been leaning towards light, effortless reads lately, especially when I’m on vacation or relaxing on a Sunday afternoon,” says O’Sullivan, who also co-hosts the “Petty Crimes” podcast with Griff Stark-Ennis. “I don’t criticize myself for enjoying lighter books, and I firmly believe that listening to audiobooks is definitely reading!”
She enjoys exploring Central Park while listening to audiobooks, often using them to unwind after a busy night at “SNL.”
“I pace around my apartment with an audiobook playing through my AirPods until I’m tired enough to sleep,” she explains. “My husband jokingly refers to these as my ‘nighttime stomps.’
Check out O’Sullivan’s six must-read book recommendations below.
“Brooklyn” by Colm Tóibín
“Brooklyn and its depiction of small-town Ireland completely captivated me. I found myself deeply invested in Eilis’ life choices in this coming-of-age tale. Being Irish and having studied abroad in Maynooth during college, I once told my mom I’d finish my studies in Ireland. Her response was, ‘No, you’re not. You’re coming home.’ I have a soft spot for Irish literature.”
“Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim” by David Sedaris
“David Sedaris is a master of his craft. His humor is dark and deeply personal. I adore his unique style of storytelling.”
“The Maid” by Nita Prose
“I’m a sucker for a bestselling mystery, and ‘The Maid’ didn’t disappoint. The main character, Molly, is incredibly likable and easy to root for.”
“Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng
“I enjoyed both the book and its television adaptation. It’s engagingly melodramatic and tackles significant issues.”
“Bossypants” by Tina Fey
“I read this book during college, and it definitely played a part in my decision to pursue writing for ‘SNL.’”
“The Rosie Project” by Graeme Simsion
“This novel is absolutely hilarious. Everyone I’ve recommended it to has fallen in love with it.”
