He thought he was rescuing a sheep—but it turned out to be something else
This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
A strawberry that lasts over a week in the fridge? It sounds almost too good to be true. Yet, there’s a surprisingly simple storage technique that can make this a reality.
From Gariguette to Mara des Bois, Ciflorette, Cléry, and Charlotte, there are over 600 varieties of strawberries. These fruits range in color from brick red to vermillion and vary in sweetness and tartness. Their juicy and aromatic flesh is delicious raw in fruit salads, pureed into coulis, cooked down into jams, and featured in desserts from charlottes to fraisiers and pies. While their peak season runs from April to June, harvesting can continue into early fall with everbearing strawberry plants.
Delicious as they are, strawberries are incredibly delicate. Once cut or hulled, they must be eaten immediately. Even whole, they struggle to last more than 48 hours in a cool, dry place, and at best three days in the refrigerator. Ideally, they should be stored in the vegetable crisper in a perforated container, not stacked to prevent accelerated spoiling (or alternatively, with layers of paper towel between each layer). Admittedly, these steps only add a few hours to their shelf life, which can be quite limiting…
To extend their lifespan, people often resort to freezing them, canning, or turning them into syrup. However, did you know there’s another trick to keep them fresh for an entire week? On Instagram, Antoine (@antoineetmamie) shared his method in detail, and it’s quite straightforward.
First, thoroughly wash your strawberries in a mixture of water and white vinegar to remove bacteria and potential parasites. Then, drain them and gently dry them using a salad spinner (but don’t spin too vigorously, they aren’t lettuce after all…). Next, take a glass jar, place a paper towel at the bottom, stack your fruits inside, and securely close the lid. Stored in the refrigerator like this, your strawberries will stay fresh for over 7 days without losing their flavor or texture, according to our influencer of the day. Definitely worth a try with your next batch!
Strawberries may be a fragile fruit, but this simple method is a game-changer. No more need to rush and eat them or freeze them to extend their life: a jar, a bit of care, and they can last the week without a decline in taste or texture. A clever solution that deserves a try.
