When Emma embarked on a new job, she had no idea her entire life was about to be transformed by two pivotal encounters.

I met Florent eight years ago while working at a campground in the Basque Country. It was my first year as a receptionist, immersing myself in the seasonal job atmosphere, its endless overtime, and its summer camp-like vibe. From the start, Florent was incredibly kind to me. Being his fourth season, he happily shared insights into the tourism industry. We quickly became inseparable—spending 6 out of 7 days together at work and most of our free time in shared spaces definitely brought us closer! It took us just three weeks to start sharing our tents as well.

After that season, I knew seasonal work was my calling. I loved the intense, festive pace. Following a well-deserved vacation, I joined Florent for a winter season in the mountains and began a new life dictated by the sun in summer and snow in winter. For years, this lifestyle suited me perfectly. I worked tirelessly for 8 months of the year and enjoyed life during the remaining 4. The mobility and the constant discovery of new tourist spots and meeting diverse people were exhilarating.

We didn’t have the courage to face the truth

But during my fifth winter in the mountains, I felt less fulfilled. It seemed something was missing from my life, which had satisfied me for so long. I was about to turn 31 and no longer wanted to live this way. I desired a stable home and to start a family. Once I realized this, I discussed it with Florent… who didn’t share my feelings. For him, the seasonal lifestyle was a way of life he wasn’t ready to give up. He didn’t want to lose me, but couldn’t imagine living permanently in one place. He feared boredom and stagnation. At that time, we lacked the courage to confront our issues, but I believe it was our relationship that was truly stagnating. In season, it was easy to ignore as we were rarely alone. However, during our vacations, it was clear that our relationship had changed; we simply coexisted without much connection.

A Meeting That Changes Everything

Still deeply attached to Florent—and keeping in mind that our relationship could evolve, and we might even have children together one day—I followed him for one last season at a campground on the Mediterranean coast. The place was beautiful, relatively untouched by the mass tourism that plagued the region. I felt immediately comfortable and connected well with the team, especially with Etienne. We shared the same sense of humor and a mutual appreciation for the natural beauty around us. Initially, I didn’t think anything romantic would happen between us. He, too, had come with his girlfriend, Charlotte. But as weeks passed, our connection grew. The real turning point came one evening when we discussed our shared desire to settle down and start families.

It was a real shock to the system.

It felt surreal: the four of us, Etienne, Florent, Charlotte, and I, discussing our futures. With each sentence Etienne spoke, it was as if he read my mind, while Florent and Charlotte found they shared similar desires and needs. It was an electric shock to my system.

Florent and I didn’t discuss it further. It seemed easier to pretend nothing had changed. But anyone could see I was drawing closer to Etienne, and Florent was bonding with Charlotte. Mid-season, Etienne confided that he had broken up with Charlotte. They were no longer aligned, their relationship had reached its limits. After a couple of weeks of deep reflection, I could no longer lie to myself: Etienne had made me confront reality. I had to break up as well. I gathered my courage and told Florent it was over. It was the simplest breakup of my life. For the first time in a long while, we were in agreement. Despite our deep affection for each other, it was time to move forward and listen to our true desires rather than sacrifice for a faltering relationship.

When Breakups and New Romances Intertwine

I told Etienne about the breakup the next day. Expecting nothing from him, I didn’t want to rush things while Florent was still at the same campground. But just six days later, I found out he had slept with Charlotte. He hadn’t wasted any time… And after hiding for a week, Florent and Charlotte were openly a couple.

As the season drew to a close, without much thought, I suggested to Etienne that we take a vacation together. We boarded a ferry to Corsica and shared our first kiss as the ship sailed away, standing at the bow. I will always remember the feeling of freedom as we moved away from the shore, the sense that anything was possible and a new life awaited. It was three unforgettable weeks. Upon returning to the mainland, we decided to move to the same city. It was too soon to live together, but we were too in love to be apart. Especially since this budding relationship was our treasure, deserving of our time and energy.

Today, I live with Etienne in a cozy house and have found the stability I needed. After three years together, we decided we were ready to start a family… And I am now six months pregnant! I no longer speak to Florent, but I’ve heard through mutual acquaintances that he is still with Charlotte. It’s incredible that that final season turned out to be such a critical turning point in our lives. As odd as it may seem, we swapped partners… And those breakups paved the way for beautiful new romances!
