This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
In the expansive realm of fragrances, vanilla holds a particularly esteemed position. Here are three standout choices guaranteed to garner praise.
Vanilla fragrances are more popular than ever. Once considered too simplistic and heavy, especially due to its pairing with tiaré flower in the 90s and early 2000s, vanilla is experiencing a sophisticated revival. Nowadays, vanilla has shed its image as a “cheap” or “overly sweet” scent, thanks to a resurgence of exceptional raw materials and niche perfumery. It is now crafted in the form of an absolute which, unlike synthetic vanilla, features woody, spicy, and even slightly leathery notes. This transformation has been a refreshing revolution for fragrances and our senses alike.
Since my childhood, I’ve been a huge fan of vanilla-scented perfumes to the point that I find it hard to stray from them. For a fragrance to capture my heart for the long term, it must feature this cherished spice. However, it shouldn’t be too “obvious,” but rather, expertly blended. As a beauty journalist, I’ve had the opportunity to try numerous scents, from the well-known to the obscure. In my search for the perfect vanilla perfume, three have stood out and consistently earn me compliments when I wear them. I can’t keep these gems secret.
The first is one I’ve embraced for several years. Even though I occasionally switch, I always return to Goddess by Burberry. What sets it apart? It’s crafted from three forms of Madagascar vanilla: infusion, caviar, and absolute. A rare approach in perfumery. This exquisite trio is enhanced by a bright touch of lavender. The result is chic, sensual, modern, and addictive. Since discovering it in 2023, I’ve lost count of how often I’ve been asked about my scent.
The epitome of vanilla fragrances is undoubtedly Vanilla Powder by Matière Première. Created by perfumer Aurélien Guichard (known for Burberry’s Hero and Narciso Poudré by Narciso Rodriguez), it blends Madagascar vanilla with coconut powder, heliotrope, musks, and palo santo. The outcome? A sophisticated, radiant, yet also deeply enveloping and magnetic aroma, with a lasting presence throughout the day. It’s become indispensable to me.
Perhaps the most unexpected vanilla comes in 21h50 Rêverie by Victoria Beckham. It opens with distinct tobacco leaf notes, then transitions to the most delectable vanilla mixed with cedarwood and tonka bean. The fragrance evolves so quickly that it’s crucial not to judge it on the first impression.
This scent also has a unique backstory: it was inspired by a romantic surprise from David Beckham to his wife. While dining in the heart of a rice field on the island of Java, Indonesia, thousands of tiny candles began to glow throughout the field as the sun set. This fragrance has also earned me numerous compliments. Three very different creations, but each is sure to captivate the hearts of vanilla lovers without a doubt.
