A study has scrutinized romantic behaviors around the globe, revealing staggering infidelity rates in some countries.
When picturing hotspots of infidelity, certain stereotypes spring to mind: the Italian dolce vita, Parisian love affairs, or the liberal mindset of Nordic countries. However, reality tells a different story. A comprehensive database analyzed by the Bebdible Research Center and reported by Insider Monkey surveyed over 23,000 individuals across thirty countries, spanning more than sixty years since 1960. Utilizing 1.9 million data points, the study provides a clear map of fidelity—or the lack thereof—in relationships.
Economic instability plays a significant role, according to researchers. In areas severely affected by poverty or inequality, infidelity rates tend to be higher. Scotland, for instance, has earned the unofficial title of the “infidelity capital of the world” for this reason. But other factors also contribute: boredom, lack of love, anger, low self-esteem, or simply the desire for something new. Some European countries top the list with Denmark leading with an infidelity rate of 46%. Germany and Italy are close behind at 45%, just ahead of France at 43%. In Scandinavia, despite a culture of equality and transparency, Norway and Finland exceed the 40% mark. In Spain, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, rates hover between 36% to 40%.
Yet one country stands out dramatically from the rest, with a rate surpassing its neighbors by several points. This nation reports an infidelity rate of 51%, meaning more than half of the adult population has cheated on their partner. This figure is partly due to a culturally tolerated practice, deeply ingrained in certain areas: parallel relationships, which have a specific term in the local language. Additionally, a prominent sex industry, highly visible in the economy and public spaces, contributes to this statistic. This country is Thailand.
The term Mia Noi, literally meaning “little wife,” is commonly used to describe a secondary partner maintained in addition to the official spouse. Although not universally accepted, this practice is quite prevalent in certain circles. Additionally, the prevalence of prostitution in urban and tourist areas makes extramarital relationships more accessible and less taboo.
