Here’s a statistic that’s quite staggering: there are only 0.15 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants, which is by far the lowest rate globally. However, this figure doesn’t necessarily mean that all couples are fulfilled and happy. Social pressure is a major factor contributing to this stability. In this country, marriage is not just a private matter but a collective concern. When two people tie the knot, it often involves the union of two entire families. Thus, a breakup is not just about turning over a new leaf; it’s about disrupting a social and sometimes economic balance.

Additionally, the influence of traditions is significant. In this culture, marriage is seen as a fundamental value. From childhood, individuals are taught that marriage is for life, that challenges should be overcome, and that one should not give up at the first sign of trouble. Religion also plays a role, of course. While it may not dictate everyone’s choices, it provides a framework and a point of reference. In some areas, marriage is considered a sacred bond that would be nearly sacrilegious to break. Yet, it would be oversimplifying to attribute this low divorce rate solely to religion or tradition. There are also very concrete, sometimes less noble reasons.

For example, economic dependency. Many women, especially in rural areas, do not have their own financial resources. For them, divorce could mean choosing between escaping a husband and facing poverty. And it’s not just a matter of finances. There’s also societal perception. A divorced woman in certain communities is stigmatized, marginalized, and her future prospects are jeopardized. As a result, even when relationships are strained, couples stay together. However, the country is not static. Attitudes are changing, particularly among the younger generation. In major cities, relationships are evolving, women are becoming more independent, working, and claiming their autonomy. And some couples now choose to stay together freely, not because they must, but because they want to. The concept of “marriage for life” remains strong, but it is increasingly seen as a deliberate choice rather than an obligation. In short, this country, where the word divorce is almost an urban myth, is Sri Lanka.

There, marriage is a deep commitment, a foundation around which everything else is organized. As long as this model is supported by society, religion, the economy, and traditions, divorce will continue to be the exception.
