The moment is almost here for the Oscars envelopes to be sealed.

The contenders for the 98th Academy Awards were announced this past Thursday, with Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott unveiling the nominees at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Leading the nominations with a total of 13, “Emilia Pérez” stands out, while “Wicked” and “The Brutalist” are not far behind, each securing 10 nominations.

“Anora”

Plot: Directed by Sean Baker, this modern take on the Cinderella narrative centers on Ani (Mikey Madison), a dancer navigating her tumultuous marriage to a wealthy young Russian oligarch’s son (Mark Eydelshteyn).

Other nominations: Besides competing for the evening’s most prestigious award, “Anora” is also in the running for best director, best actress (Madison), best supporting actor (Yura Borisov), best original screenplay, and best film editing.

Streaming: Currently, “Anora” is available for purchase or rental on Prime Video, though it will soon be streaming on Hulu.

“The Brutalist”

Plot: In Brady Corbet’s epic, which runs over 3.5 hours and features the first intermission in a major film since 1982’s “Gandhi,” Jewish architect Laszlo Toth (Adrien Brody) struggles with his move to the US after World War II.

Other nominations: Tied for the second most nominations this year, “The Brutalist” has earned accolades for best director, best actor (Brody), best supporting actor (Guy Pearce), best supporting actress (Felicity Jones), best original screenplay, best original score, best film editing, best cinematography, and best production design.

Streaming: While currently only available in cinemas, “The Brutalist” will be available on Max in the future.


“A Complete Unknown”

Plot: Timothée Chalamet portrays Bob Dylan in this biopic that explores the music legend’s early years in 1960s New York City.

Other nominations: Chalamet has received a nod for best actor, marking his second nomination and making him the youngest to achieve this since James Dean. The film is also nominated for best director, best supporting actor (Edward Norton), best supporting actress (Monica Barbaro), best adapted screenplay, best costume design, and best sound.

Streaming: Currently in theaters, “A Complete Unknown” is expected to be available soon on video-on-demand platforms, followed by Hulu.


“Conclave”

Plot: Adapted from Robert Harris’s novel, “Conclave” is a drama filled with scandal set in Vatican City as fictional Catholic cardinals convene to elect a new pope.

Other nominations: The film has been nominated for best picture, best actor (Ralph Fiennes), best supporting actress (Isabella Rossellini), best adapted screenplay, best film editing, best production design, best costume design, and best original score.

Streaming: “Conclave” is currently available for streaming on Peacock and for purchase or rental on Prime Video.

“Dune: Part Two”

Plot: In this sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 blockbuster, Timothée Chalemet and Zendaya return, with Paul Atreides (Chalamet) joining forces with the Fremen in a battle against House Harkonnen.

Other nominations: This sci-fi thriller has also garnered nominations for best cinematography, best production design, best sound, and best visual effects.

Streaming: Along with being available on Max and Netflix, “Dune: Part Two” can be rented or purchased on Prime Video.

“Emilia Pérez”

Plot: After winning the jury prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Jacques Audiard’s drama “Emilia Pérez” leads this year’s Oscar nominations. The film, an operatic musical, follows a lawyer (Zoe Saldaña) who assists a Mexican cartel leader in undergoing gender-affirming surgery.

Other nominations: With the highest number of nominations this year, the film has earned a best actress nod for Karla Sofía Gascón, marking her as the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar. The French-made movie is also competing for best director, best supporting actress (Zoe Saldaña), best international feature film, best original song (for both “El Mal” and “Mi Camino”), best film editing, best cinematography, best sound, and best makeup and hairstyling.

Streaming: “Emilia Pérez” is currently exclusively available on Netflix.

“I’m Still Here”

Plot: Adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s 2015 memoir, “I’m Still Here” features Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres) as she seeks the truth about the disappearance of her husband, former congressman Rubens Paiva, during Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s.

Other nominations: Fernanda Torres is contending for best actress, while the Walter Salles-directed movie is also nominated for best international feature film.

Streaming: Currently, “I’m Still Here” is only available in theaters.


“Nickel Boys”

Plot: Based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “Nickel Boys” follows Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), who are sent to a harsh reform school in Florida during the 1960s.

Other nominations: Directed by RaMell Ross, the film is also nominated for best adapted screenplay.

Streaming: “Nickel Boys” is currently showing only in theaters.


“The Substance”

Plot: In this edgy body horror film, Elizabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is fired from her TV aerobics show on her 50th birthday. In response, she takes a black market drug that produces a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley)—with unexpected consequences.

Other nominations: Following her attention-grabbing Golden Globes win, Demi Moore is in the running for best actress at the Oscars. “The Substance” is also nominated for best director, best original screenplay, and best makeup and hairstyling.

“Wicked”

Plot: Adapted from the popular musical, this blockbuster explores the early friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, long before Dorothy’s arrival in Oz.

Other nominations: “Wicked” has seen its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande nominated for best actress and best supporting actress, respectively. The film is also up for best original score, best production design, best costume design, best film editing, best sound, best visual effects, and best makeup and hairstyling.
