Nutrition expert Pierre Dukan firmly believes that sudden cravings for sweets and fats are more than just indulgence. They signify a disruption in your diet, directly affecting your weight and the quality of your daily meals. Here’s his surprising solution to curb those cravings.

Those unexpected sugar cravings that often disrupt eating habits are a common issue for many. They strike unpredictably, typically during times of stress or fatigue, and leave a feeling of nutritional defeat. Pierre Dukan discusses why this eating pattern is misunderstood and why, according to him, the problem isn’t where most people think it is.

In his video, the nutritionist starts by highlighting a crucial point. “Most people who gain weight are blamed for being gluttonous and lacking willpower. This is not only unfair, it’s incorrect.” He argues that these intense carbohydrate cravings don’t just appear out of nowhere. They emerge in response to stress, irritation, or underlying anxiety. Pierre Dukan then refers to a deeply ingrained reflex from childhood. “In response to stress, irritations, or life’s hurts, some people retain the childhood reflex of sucking their thumb as a comfort against anxiety.” While this action fades with age, the need it fills does not. He explains: “In adulthood, this reflex transforms into a search for gratifying foods, often sweets.” The sweet taste quickly soothes inner tension.

After explaining this mechanism, the nutritionist suggests that the best response to a sugar craving is dietary anticipation. “The smartest solution is obviously to anticipate, to prepare sugar-free, flour-free desserts in advance and consume them when the craving hits.” However, he acknowledges that this meal planning doesn’t fit everyone’s reality. He then addresses those critical moments when cravings hit hard: “If you feel you’re about to give in, or worse, if you’ve already started eating a packet of cookies or dipping your spoon into a jar of spread, slowly drink two sips of zero-calorie cola.”

He immediately clarifies that this solution isn’t intended to solve long-term dietary issues. It aims merely to weaken the impulse at the moment it becomes overwhelming and usually helps regain control over consumption.

He also knows this suggestion might spark controversy, especially due to the nutritional debates surrounding artificial sweeteners. He counters this straightforwardly: “Some might argue that zero-calorie cola isn’t advisable because of its sweeteners, but I respond simply: a sugar binge is infinitely more harmful than two sips of zero-calorie cola.” His stance is clear.
