“It was about five or six years into my career when I finally questioned my agent, ‘How much is my male co-star earning?’” Clarkson shared with Page Six at a recent Cinema Society screening of her latest film, “Lilly.”
The revelation from her agent came as a shock to the 65-year-old Oscar-nominated actress.
“His answer was, ‘You don’t want to know,’” she recounted.
The moment spurred Clarkson into action.
“That’s when I began to challenge every detail through my agents,” she said. “I’ve been advocating for equal pay for a long time, insisting that if my male co-star is earning a certain amount for a comparable role, then so should I.”
Clarkson noted that producers often tried to justify the pay disparity by claiming her male co-star had more experience. “I would counter that by saying, ‘No, that’s not correct. He does not have more credits,’” she explained.
According to Clarkson, her stance on equal pay led to a significant 20% increase in her salary.
The Significance of “Lilly” and Equal Pay
In her new film “Lilly,” Clarkson portrays Lilly Ledbetter, a fervent American activist who valiantly fought against wage discrimination. Ledbetter’s own battle began after she learned that she had been unfairly underpaid for years while employed at a tire factory in Alabama.
Ledbetter’s struggle eventually escalated to the Supreme Court, culminating in the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, the first piece of legislation President Obama signed into law during his tenure.
Clarkson made a personal choice not to meet Ledbetter, who passed away last year at the age of 86.
“I decided against meeting her. I had idolized her immensely. Coming from a family of five daughters and a mother who was a councilwoman and politician in New Orleans, Lilly Ledbetter was a deity to us, and I needed to humanize her in my portrayal,” Clarkson expressed.
Ledbetter understood Clarkson’s decision, reassuring her during a phone call that they would “meet at the end.”
Clarkson is hopeful that “Lilly” will inspire and resonate with women nationwide.
The movie screening was a star-studded event, attended by celebrities such as Hillary Clinton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Katie Couric, Jim Parsons, and John Slattery.
