A Peek into Jake Gyllenhaal’s Broadway Dressing Room
In a dramatic flourish befitting his role as the scheming Iago in “Othello,” Jake Gyllenhaal has transformed his Broadway dressing room into a space of luxurious splendor. His recent showcase of the room to Architectural Digest might shed light on why ticket prices for the show have soared to as high as $900.

As a noted enthusiast of refined design, Gyllenhaal, who also represents the high-end Italian porcelain brand Ginori 1735, spared no expense in curating his backstage environment, according to AD’s Charlotte Collins.
Extravagance Behind the Scenes
The opulence of Gyllenhaal’s dressing room is hard to overstate. Among the lavish furnishings are $170 coffee cups from Ginori 1735’s Oriente Italiano line, a top-tier $5,900 La Marzocco espresso maker, and more than $6,000 in artwork by Joel Tomlin. A standout piece is a $19,000 handcrafted chess set by artist Minjae Kim, flanked by two uniquely designed chairs that play into the racial motifs of “Othello.”
Gyllenhaal, with the creative input of designers Ruby Kean and Lisa Jones from Atelier LK, also incorporated several high-priced items from Somerset House into the decor. These include a $9,000 modernist sofa, a set of $18,000 bentwood barrel chairs designed by Josef Hoffman for J & J Kohn, and a $22,000 19th-century French coffee table. It’s possible these pieces were rented for the duration of his performances.
Additional eye-catching elements provided by designer Sophie Lou Jacobsen include a $9,200 pendant light and an $8,600 mirror adorned with floral motifs.
Gyllenhaal explained to the publication, “I’m not attempting to be a dramaturg, but the mixture of materials — both harsh and soft, dangerous yet comforting — aligns perfectly with the themes of ‘Othello’.”
Luxury Meets Limited Company
Despite the allure of Gyllenhaal’s revamped dressing room, it appears to have been insufficient to consistently attract Denzel Washington, who stars as Othello. Gyllenhaal disclosed that although Washington has visited occasionally, the dynamics of their roles usually lead him to visit Washington’s dressing area instead.
The actor’s effort to create a backstage area that reflects both the luxury of his personal taste and the intense drama of “Othello” demonstrates a deep connection to his role and to the theatrical experience itself.
