Lady Gaga captivated the audience with a spectacular performance on the main stage at Coachella 2025 on Friday night. Her show, almost two hours in length, featured a dramatic blend of her greatest hits like “Paparazzi,” “Poker Face,” and “Bad Romance,” as well as tracks from her latest album, “Mayhem.”
The show was ingeniously designed around the theme of old versus new, showcasing Gaga’s transformation back and forth between the dark, enigmatic Mistress of “Mayhem” and a celestial persona across three different acts.
The performance kicked off with a pre-recorded skit that introduced these contrasting personas in a captivating exchange. Gaga first emerged on stage as the Mistress, her hair styled into a sleek, chin-length jet-black bob with bangs.
At 39, Gaga made a dramatic entrance in an imposing, multi-tiered red gown which cleverly concealed several dancers within its voluminous, ruffled skirt and was adorned with horn-like accents at the collar and wrists.
Throughout this monumental performance, Gaga underwent multiple costume changes, each echoing iconic looks from her past, such as the face-obscuring bodysuits in white and red lace adorned with a crown reminiscent of her “The Fame” days.
The fashion show continued with a bondage-themed Dolce & Gabbana buckle jacket, a Captain Hook-style coat, and a mirrored catsuit, adding to the visual feast.
During an inventive rendition of “Poker Face,” set on a chessboard-like stage, Gaga, dressed in a black veil and lace bodysuit, engaged in a thrilling dance battle with her doppelgänger.
The stage design and choreography, a collaboration with Parris Goebel—who previously worked on the “Disease” and “Abracadabra” music videos—took inspiration from classic theater, evoking a “Phantom of the Opera” vibe with its spectacular theatricality.
Shifting away from the darker themes, in Act Two, Gaga adopted a romantic, tattered white ensemble and a long blonde braided wig to perform songs like “Perfect Celebrity,” “Alejandro,” and “Paparazzi,” the latter featuring her in similar silver crutches and arm braces as seen in the music video from 2009.
Returning to her “Mayhem” persona, Gaga delivered a heartfelt performance of “Vanish Into You,” interacting closely with her fans while clad in a futuristic gray blazer and black patent leather shorts. She later reappeared for an encore in signature Gaga style.
Resurrecting her earlier look, she donned a blond wig and an elaborate white feather bodysuit with exaggerated hips and a high collar, complete with elongated finger gloves that stretched past her knees.
In a pre-show interview with Out magazine, Gaga shared insights into her performance. “‘Mayhem’ is essentially about gothic dreams, a theme that’s been in my music since the beginning. I’m focused on the lighting, the atmosphere, the energy, and the emotions I want to evoke tonight,” she explained.
This marked Gaga’s second headline performance at the renowned California music festival; she had previously stepped in for Beyoncé in 2017 after the latter withdrew due to her pregnancy.
Faced with a tight schedule back then, Gaga had limited opportunity to develop a full-fledged stage design or wardrobe, having been given only two weeks’ notice.
“I’ve always dreamt of hosting an unforgettable night of mayhem in the desert,” Gaga posted on Instagram as she was announced as a headliner for 2025. She added, “There was a vision I couldn’t completely achieve at Coachella earlier due to unforeseen circumstances, but I’m here to make it right for the fans this time around.”
