Kids, adults, celebrities, and even pets are fans of the animated hit ‘Bluey.’
This cherished series, centered around an Australian Heeler dog family, premiered in Australia in 2018 and quickly captured hearts worldwide. It’s now broadcast in over 60 countries, including the U.S., U.K., and China, and ranks as one of the top children’s programs globally, boasting nearly 44 billion minutes streamed on Disney+ in 2023, as reported by Deadline.
“It’s quite surreal. I’m thrilled,” Joe Brumm, the creator of ‘Bluey,’ expressed to Deadline regarding the show’s international success. “It’s a huge relief because its global appeal was never a certainty, and I really had no clue how it would be received.”
Brumm’s idea—to create a children’s show that would also appeal to adults—has not only succeeded but has also turned ‘Bluey’ into a cultural sensation, even featuring its own balloon in the 2022 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The series is so cherished that the season 3 finale, “The Surprise,” which suggested the series might be concluding, caused considerable alarm among its fans. However, ‘Bluey’ producer Sam Moor clarified the future of the series in April 2024 to the BBC, stating, “No, it is not the end for ‘Bluey.’ I’m sure we have many more surprises in store for you. We have more upcoming and we are considering what’s next.”
With the fourth season of ‘Bluey’ on its way and a new set of minisodes currently available for streaming, let’s dive into the delightful canine characters that have won over audiences during the show’s first three seasons.
Bluey Heeler
Bluey Heeler, the series’ main character, is a 7-year-old blue heeler puppy brimming with energy, curiosity, and creativity. She relishes playing imaginative games with her family, which includes her mom Chilli, dad Bandit, and younger sister Bingo, as well as with her numerous friends.
One of Bluey’s favorite activities is pretending she’s an adult engaged in various grown-up tasks—whether that means operating her own taxi service or dressing up as Granny Janet with her sister Bingo (a.k.a. Granny Rita). Although Bluey is presently only 7, the season 3 finale, “Surprise,” offers a glimpse into her future, showing an adult Bluey visiting her childhood home with her own child.
Bingo Heeler
Bluey’s adorable younger sister, Bingo Heeler, is a 4-year-old red heeler pup, sharing the same breed as her mom, Chilli (while Bluey is blue). More sensitive and timid than her sister, Bingo also shares Bluey’s playful and energetic spirit.
When not involved in Bluey’s adventures, Bingo often plays with insects and bugs, admiring nature’s marvels. She is seldom seen without her beloved stuffed rabbit, Floppy.
Bandit Heeler
Bandit Heeler, father to Bluey and Bingo, has emerged as a father figure icon. An archaeologist by profession, he devotes most of his energy to being an involved and imaginative dad. His activities with his daughters range from creating games and playing dress-up to dodging “tickle crabs.”
Bluey and Bingo’s vibrant imaginations can be attributed to their father, Bandit, who himself has several playful personas, including the mischievous Unicorse.
Chilli Heeler
Chilli Heeler is the composed mother of Bluey and Bingo and Bandit’s wife. She manages motherhood alongside her job in airport security, providing stability and calm in the often chaotic Heeler household.
Chilli, voiced by Melanie Zanetti, has also captured the hearts of fans, even gracing the cover of InStyle Australia’s February 2023 “icons” issue.
“Chilli is someone I’d love to be friends with,” Zanetti shared with InStyle Australia. “She’s intelligent, fun, and possesses a dry sense of humor that I adore. She’s incredibly kind and excels at connecting with others, especially her little pups. But she’s also genuinely humorous and enjoys playful banter with Bandit.”
Uncle Stripe
Stripe, Bluey and Bingo’s uncle, is also the husband of Aunt Trixie, father to Muffin and Socks, and Bandit’s younger brother. A lover of squash, his car, BBQs, and a good old-fashioned “stumpfest,” Stripe is voiced by Dan Brumm, the younger brother of ‘Bluey’ creator Joe Brumm.
Aunt Trixie
Aunt Trixie, Uncle Stripe’s better half, is also the mother to Muffin and Socks and an aunt to Bluey and Bingo. Known for her straightforwardness and occasional teasing of adults, Trixie is adored by all the children and enjoys playing hockey with Chilli.
Muffin
Muffin, the older daughter of Stripe and Trixie and cousin to Bluey and Bingo, is a non-stop, outspoken pup. Frequently brimming with energy (especially when she’s missed her nap), Muffin sometimes struggles with sharing, playing nicely, and pronouncing her “r’s.”
Socks
Muffin’s younger sister, Socks, is the youngest member of the extended Heeler family at just 1 year old. She’s learning to walk and talk, trying to keep pace with her older sister and cousins, Bluey and Bingo.
Uncle Radley
Radley, the eldest brother of Bandit and Stripe, previously worked on an oil rig in Western Australia, which limited his family visits. However, in season 3’s extended episode, “The Sign,” Uncle Radley marries Frisky. After learning she did not want to move out west with him, he quits his job and relocates to the city to be closer to family.
Frisky
Frisky, Bluey’s godmother, met Uncle Radley while babysitting Bluey and Bingo. She later married him in Bandit and Chilli’s backyard in the episode “The Sign,” officially becoming Bluey and Bingo’s aunt.
Nana Chris Heeler
Nana Chris Heeler is the mother to Bandit, Radley, and Stripe, and grandmother to Bluey, Bingo, Muffin, and Socks. Although strict during her sons’ upbringing, she has one rule as a grandparent: Everyone gets what they want. Nana is also voiced by show creator Joe Brumm’s mother, Chris Brumm.
Grandpa Bob Heeler
Grandpa Bob, retired along with Nana on Australia’s sunny Gold Coast, once took a trip to India to “find himself.” He made his return at Uncle Radley and Frisky’s wedding in season 3’s “The Sign.”
Grandad Mort Cattle
Grandad Mort is Chilli’s father and the maternal grandfather of Bluey and Bingo. A retired Army veteran, he now enjoys canoeing, bushwalking, and spending time with his granddaughters.
Aunty Brandy Cattle
Aunty Brandy, Chilli’s sister and another aunt to Bluey and Bingo, reconnected with Chilli after four years apart. Voiced by Rose Byrne, Brandy appeared in one of ‘Bluey’s’ most touching episodes (“Onesies”), which hinted at her struggles with infertility. However, season 3’s “The Sign” reveals that Brandy is expecting.
Calypso
Calypso, Bluey’s schoolteacher, is an Australian shepherd often found singing and humming as she oversees her students.
Chloe
Chloe, a dalmatian, is one of Bluey’s best friends, known for her kindness, intelligence, and vivid imagination.
Indy
Indy, an Afghan hound and another of Bluey’s close school friends, is a free-spirited music and dance lover. She adheres to a strict diet, avoiding wheat, gluten, sugar, salt, and dairy.
Mackenzie
Mackenzie, a border collie from New Zealand, is direct and often seen playing with Bluey and their friends Jack and Rusty.
Jack Russel
Jack Russel, fittingly a Jack Russell terrier, is a new student at Bluey’s school, Glasshouse Primary School. While he struggles with sitting still and memory, Jack loves playing with his friends, including Bluey.
Rusty
Rusty, Jack Russel’s best friend and also a friend of Bluey and Mackenzie, is a red kelpie who loves pretending to be a handyman or playing “dust-off” with Jack, emulating his father, who is in the Army.
Honey
Honey, a beagle from Bluey’s school, is known for her round-rimmed glasses. While she sometimes finds it challenging to keep up with Bluey’s imaginative games, Honey excels at building with toys and has a unique way of wagging her entire body while keeping her tail still.
Coco
Coco, a pink poodle with two distinctive blue butterfly clips, has eight older siblings and has known Bluey since they were infants. They attend the same school class, where Coco is best friends with Indy.
Snickers
Snickers, a dachshund, is often spotted wearing his yellow and green Australia cap. Friends with Bluey since infancy, Snickers loves cupcakes, rolling around, and pretending to be a news reporter for K9 news.
Winton
Winton, an obedient English Bulldog and a classmate of Bluey’s, comes from a family where his parents are divorced, and his father Cornelius is dating the Terriers’ mom. Known for standing very close to his friends, Winton is learning about respecting personal space.
The Terriers
The Terriers, triplet miniature schnauzer brothers, love to pretend they are Scottish soldiers, ready to defend their forts and castles with shields and swords. They are classmates and friends with Bluey and others in Calypso’s class.
Pretzel
Pretzel, a chihuahua in Bluey’s class at Glasshouse Primary School, initially shy, warms up to playing with his friends. He once had a pet guinea pig that ran away.
Missy
Missy, an Australian terrier and one of Bluey’s best friends from kindergarten, sometimes gets frightened during Bluey’s high-energy games like “pirates,” but Bluey and Bingo help her build courage.
Pom Pom
Pom Pom, another friend of Bluey and Bingo’s, is a tiny teacup pomeranian. Despite her small size, her energy, commanding voice, and persistence are immense.
Winnie
Winnie, a chocolate labrador, became fast friends with Bluey after they played “cafe” together at the playground and have remained close ever since.
Jean-Luc
Jean-Luc, a French-speaking black labrador, met Bluey on a camping trip. Despite the language barrier, they communicated and bonded through play.
Mrs. Retriever
Mrs. Retriever, a golden retriever, is Bingo’s kindergarten teacher at school.
Lila
Lila, a fluffy white maltese, is Bingo’s best friend. They met on the first day of kindergarten in Mrs. Retriever’s class and have been inseparable since. Lila is shy, but Bingo helps her come out of her shell.
Bentley
Bentley, a cavalier King Charles spaniel in Mrs. Retriever’s class with Bingo, has a twin sister named Zara. She is inventive, friendly, and determined, especially when mastering the monkey bars.
Buddy
Buddy, another classmate of Bingo’s, is a pug known for his loud breathing and patient demeanor. He is occasionally spacey and has even been known to doze off at the top of the slide.
Judo
Judo, Bingo and Bluey’s next-door neighbor, has known Bluey since they were babies. A chow chow pup, she is a bit bossy and very attached to certain individuals, including Bluey, Bingo, and Pom Pom.
Lucky and Chucky
Lucky and Chucky, Bluey’s other next-door neighbors, are golden labrador brothers with contrasting personalities: Lucky is energetic, sporty, and competitive, while Chucky is sensitive, kind, and prefers dancing to sports.
Captain and Mia
Captain, an American foxhound, and Mia, an English setter, are Mackenzie and Bluey’s older friends at school.
Pat and Janelle
Pat and Janelle are the Heelers’ next-door neighbors and the parents of Lucky and Chucky. Pat, the father of Lucky and Chucky, often joins in games with the Heeler family and is friends with Bandit’s brother Stripe.
