Jack Revill, known professionally as Jackmaster, the acclaimed Scottish DJ and producer, has passed away. His death was confirmed through a statement on his official Instagram, which noted that he died on Saturday, October 12, due to complications from an accidental head injury sustained in Ibiza. “The family is profoundly moved by the outpouring of support from Jack’s friends, colleagues, and admirers but asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read. Jackmaster was 38 years old.
The statement from his family praised his fervor for music and his dedication to exploring new artistic avenues with his work at the Numbers label and Rubadub Records in Glasgow. His efforts in discovering and promoting innovative artists established him as a pivotal and cherished figure in the electronic music scene. “Jack’s knack for mixing different music styles and his powerful DJ sets and productions won him esteem and respect worldwide. His enduring influence on the dance music landscape will continue to be felt,” they added.
Jackmaster always prioritized his role as a DJ over being a producer, and he inspired many other DJs. He relished the opportunity to display his eclectic taste in music, skillfully combining tracks from various genres, times, and levels of recognition, particularly when performing alongside other DJs in back-to-back sets.
Jackmaster was born in Glasgow in 1986 and was first introduced to DJing by his best friend, Calum Morton, who would later become a professional collaborator. As a teenager, he dedicated much of his time to perfecting his DJing skills. His early career was significantly shaped by his time at Rubadub, a well-known record shop where he started working at the age of 14. Rather than a traditional salary, Jackmaster opted to be paid in vinyl records, an arrangement that not only built his music collection but also established valuable industry connections. “I just fucking loved music so much and it was all I was ever doing,” he recounted to Resident Advisor in 2014. He further mentioned how perks like first access to promotional records and direct contacts in the music industry, such as those with Detroit’s Underground Resistance, were crucial to his development.
In 2010, Jackmaster combined his two record labels, Dress 2 Sweat and Wireblock, with Stuff to launch the new label, Numbers, named after the club night they managed in Glasgow. This label has released music by artists like SOPHIE, Jamie xx, Hudson Mohawke, Jessie Ware, and Rustie, both digitally and on vinyl.
While Jackmaster released several original singles, including “Nitro” and “Let’s Go,” his most notable projects were the mixes FabricLive.57 and DJ-Kicks in 2016, which were highly acclaimed. His latest works were the 2023 releases, Party Going On EP, and collaborations “Bumpin’” and “Just Get Up” with Avision.
In 2018, Jackmaster issued a public apology for inappropriate behavior at the Loves Saves the Day festival, attributing his actions to the effects of GHB which he consumed after his performance. He admitted to attempting to kiss and grab several people without their consent.
Following his death, numerous artists have shared tributes to Jackmaster, including Diplo, Honey Dijon, Modeselektor, Black Coffee, Dillon Francis, and Peggy Gou. Disclosure, on Instagram, described him as “Inspiration. Pure talent. Pioneering DJ. Friend. The music scene will never be the same without you. Thank you for all the amazing memories, shows & laughs we had together. Rest in peace Jack.”
