Trust is the cornerstone of any healthy, long-lasting relationship, manifesting through both words and actions.
Opening your heart, sharing your deepest emotions, and letting someone into your world can make you feel incredibly vulnerable—especially in love! For a relationship to truly open up, mutual trust between partners is crucial. Without it, it’s impossible to establish a secure environment that allows both individuals to reveal themselves and thrive together. Capucine Moreau, a sexologist and couples therapist, guides us in recognizing the signs of a calm and trusting relationship.
► The first sign of a trust-based relationship is a relaxed body. The body speaks its own language, one that never lies! Stomach aches, a tight throat, heart palpitations… When these symptoms occur frequently, they may indicate underlying issues. “These could reflect doubts, anxieties… It’s important to listen to your feelings,” advises Capucine Moreau. Conversely, a relationship rooted in trust is synonymous with comfort and tranquility. Chloé, who has been in a relationship for three years, cherishes the peace that defines her partnership: “I never overthink things, I’m not stressed when he goes out with his friends, for example. It feels good not to worry!”
“No one owns anyone”
► Individual freedom is another pillar of a healthy relationship. Being a couple doesn’t mean sharing everything, be it thoughts or activities! A trusting relationship fundamentally relies on respecting each other’s individuality and privacy. This means being able to have time to yourself without making the other person feel excluded. “No one owns anyone. For a relationship to work, it’s crucial to maintain your personal space and respect your partner’s as well.” Possessiveness and jealousy have no place in a balanced relationship. “We don’t monitor each other’s every move. I would never think to check his phone, for example,” Chloé confirms. Besides mutual respect, a secure relationship also provides a space where each person can grow, pursue their projects, and fulfill their dreams. “We must accept each other’s growth and development,” the couples therapist agrees. When trust is present, your partner becomes a source of support rather than a hindrance.
► Finally, expressing insecurities is a sign of a strong relationship. Disagreements and tensions aren’t necessarily indicators of a faulty relationship. According to Capucine Moreau, the ability to share these feelings actually demonstrates the couple’s strength: “You can tell your partner that you didn’t appreciate them talking to an ex, or that you are worried about their business trip, for example. Sharing your fears is also an act of trust.” Communicating and, more importantly, listening: for the therapist, these emotional skills are crucial to maintain an environment where each person feels free to express their vulnerabilities.
“These insecurities need to be acknowledged. It’s not necessarily about changing your plans or behavior to please the other, but about paying attention to how they feel and considering their emotions,” Chloé has experienced this firsthand. At the beginning of her relationship, she had doubts about her partner’s feelings: “I shared my concerns with him, and he reassured me about what I meant to him. We share everything openly, without ever judging each other. This transparency has strengthened our bond and the trust I have in him.”
