These are the unmistakable signs of a strong relationship, according to our couples therapist.
“A resilient couple is one that endures over time, withstands life’s challenges, and navigates the monotony of everyday life,” states Sandrine Carême, a sexologist and couples therapist. She highlights several key indicators of a relationship that is unshakeable:
- Communication is the cornerstone of any robust relationship. “It’s crucial for partners to openly share their thoughts, feelings, and opinions without fear of judgment, to have smooth communication, and to listen to each other. There is no room for violence in a healthy relationship; every effort should be made to overcome conflicts,” explains Carême. Improving communication skills is a learnable trait. She suggests encouraging your partner to express their emotions, needs, and concerns, as well as discussing the relationship and practicing active listening without interrupting or judging. Accepting each other’s words and emotions is key to fostering understanding and minimizing misunderstandings.
- Trust is a fundamental element of a partnership. “Each partner must be able to trust the other and respect their personal space and secrets,” argues Carême.
- Maintaining some degree of independence within a strong relationship is vital. Both partners should keep their individual interests and maintain their own friendships.
- Mutual support is another unwavering proof of a solid relationship. A lasting relationship thrives on partners supporting each other through tough times (illness, grief, job loss) and celebrating both small and big successes together. Support goes hand in hand with respecting each other: respecting boundaries, valuing opinions and dreams without trying to impose one’s own views.
- The ability to resolve conflicts is a critical foundation of a loving relationship. While disagreements are a normal part of a relationship, being able to overcome them is an undeniable indicator of its strength. “Often, relationships that don’t last are those that can’t overcome conflicts because they fall into repetitive patterns from which they can’t escape. In contrast, a strong couple learns to manage and resolve conflicts; partners seek solutions together, acting as teammates rather than opponents,” describes the specialist. A resilient couple looks for constructive solutions to resolve disputes or seeks help to do so in the most effective way. Both partners manage to compromise, handle their emotions, and remain respectful even when they disagree.
- The amount of time spent together is a reliable sign of a solid relationship. It is important to share common activities, hobbies, outings, to have projects, and to carve out time for one another. “This builds intimacy in the moment and also creates memories for the future, which undoubtedly strengthens the relationship,” emphasizes the therapist.
- Lastly, maintaining intimacy and affection is crucial for the longevity of a relationship.
“Displays of affection, whether physical (gentle touches, hugs, kisses, sexual relations) or verbal (compliments, sweet nothings), help to reinforce the emotional and physical bond of the couple,” concludes our expert.
