Many children tend to keep to themselves, holding in their worries and thoughts. Here’s the key phrase to encourage them to open up, according to an expert.

While some kids are open books, eagerly sharing every detail of their day and innermost thoughts with their parents, others find it much more challenging. This reticence can stem from numerous reasons. Parenting expert Laurie Gozlan, who shares advice on her Instagram account @_petit_deviendra_grand_, points out that a child might fear their parent’s reaction, worry about punishment, or fear disappointing them. Sometimes, a child may not see the value in sharing certain things, believing that their parent won’t be able to help or won’t believe them. At other times, shame may prevent them from speaking up. Essentially, a child might keep a secret not because they want to, but because they are afraid of what might follow.

Creating a trusting environment is crucial, therefore, it’s vital to reassure your child that they can talk about anything without fear of judgment or overreaction. Parents sometimes have a tendency to either downplay or overemphasize what their child shares, which can make them hesitant to speak freely. However, as Gozlan highlights, a child who feels their parent is a strong support will be more likely to confide in them.

Indeed, how a parent receives their child’s confidences plays a critical role. Listening is not enough; it must be done with empathy and openness. If a child senses that their parent is uncomfortable, panics, or judges too quickly, they will unfortunately choose to remain silent. This underscores the importance of responding calmly and showing that no topic is off-limits. So, how should this availability and open-mindedness be communicated? According to Laurie Gozlan on Instagram, the phrase that can make all the difference is: “You can talk to me about absolutely anything, there is no topic that I am not ready to discuss with you. Whether it’s weird, hard, embarrassing, or funny… all these situations are part of growing up, and I cherish all our conversations.”

By clearly expressing your openness and non-judgmental attitude, you reassure your child that they are safe to share their thoughts and feelings. It is also crucial to establish this trustful environment to support them when they need it. Ultimately, this ensures many heartfelt one-on-one conversations!
