The older male partner is often seen in a very specific light.
Unconventional relationships are on the rise, including those with significant age differences. While some may find this shocking, others understand the motives behind a younger woman’s choice to partner with an older man. According to Violaine de Laplagnolle, a marriage and family counselor, a primary reason is the need for security. “An older man can provide reassurance to the younger woman, be it emotionally, socially, or financially.”
Some women seek financial stability. They might have experienced financial hardships or fear future monetary issues. Emotionally, an older man is often more mature. Women feel secure because they can rely on their partner’s maturity. For women drawn to older men, these men can provide a comfortable lifestyle and a home where children can be raised and educated properly. This pursuit of stability and balance sometimes stems from childhood. “Some young girls may have experienced fulfilling paternal love and seek to find that in their life partners. Conversely, others who felt an emotional void from their fathers might attempt to fill that gap by choosing an older man.”
The second reason women gravitate towards older men is experience. With age comes experience and often wisdom. “Some women are disappointed by men their age or younger, finding them immature. They then seek out older men who offer the maturity they desire.” The older male partner is thus perceived as reliable, understanding, and patient. Their emotional maturity aids them in having a clear vision for the future and managing life’s challenges effectively. Regardless of the age difference, whether it is the man or woman who is the younger partner, the key is to agree on a lifestyle pace, which can vary significantly, as can each person’s aspirations.
